When Mungo Man and Mungo Lady were discovered by Professor Jim Bowler geologist in 1974 the discover was ground breaking. The remains were more than 40,000 years old and, with other discoveries, demonstrated continuous habitation of this extraordinary continent for several millennia. I favour the proposal, supported by community representatives of the Mutthi Mutthi people, upon reburial, of the installation of an appropriate keeping place, together with an interpretative centre at or near the site, consistently with world heritage conservation techniques. Governments ought properly respect such views, whilst also observing burial rites of the traditional owners. A similar approach has been indicated by the Gadigal clan and provisionally supported by the NSWG with respect to the remains of Bennelong recently confirmed at Putney.
